29/30 March 2025

Underway on Day 1.

Winter league Champion of Champions

Abridged/edited from report on BARCS forum by Peter Gunning.

Day 1 – Evolution – Mickeys SW 8 – 28ms

Day 1 dawned bright, sunny and cold with winds of around 10ms - and some thermic influence.

Round 1 was won by Bruce with a 41.90, his FS5 looking majestic - some might have thought Joel was still on the sticks :-)

Paul Garnett won round 2 with 36.34 flying reversals with his ten year old Proton. Meanwhile increasing wind speed and cloud cover brought more consistent conditions.

Greg won round 3 with a 36.20, with Mike E, Mark R and Peter also on 36.

Rounds 4 and 5 saw Mark R and Paul trading blows with 32 and 31 respectively, Paul’s ‘full pull’ reversals and Mark’s super tight EM proving equally effective.

Round 6 was won by Greg with a 34. Peter, Mart R and Mark T had 36’s, with JP on 37. By then the wind was gusting to around 20ms, making landings tricky.

In round 7 there was a brief stoppage due to rain after which Mark R flew a 33 to win the round.

By around 3pm the conditions were causing some carnage and a call was made to pack up. About five minutes later the rain closed in, accompanied 28ms gusts. It was WILD!

Day 2 Nobody’s favourite: Ice Cream slope NW 6 - 8ms!

Day 2 dawned bright and sunny as we headed for the Ice Cream slope, hoping the inevitable variability would favour us. We were greeted by a wind crossed from the left, fortunately the forecast to come on to the slope later and so it proved.

The first round of the day (Round 8 overall) was won by Mark Treble with a 36, from Mark R with 40 and Pengy on 42. The rest were mainly in the mid to high 40’s. This set the pattern for the day times ranging in the mid 30’s possible (very good air) to high 40’s to 50’s.

Round 9 was won by Mark R with a 41 from Paul G close behind on 42

Round 10 was won by JP with a 40, just pipping Greg. Paul stole some time back from Mark R with another 42.

Round 11 was won by Mike Evans with a 40. By this stage the leaders Mark and Paul were separated by only 70 points, however Paul G’s Proton flipped on landing and broke the boom which was to hamper his battle for the lead.

Mike Evans won again in round 12 with a 41 from Les Wood, Bruce, Peter and Mark R all on 43. With is Proton temporarily out of action Paul flew his Needle 124. Unfortunately it didn’t look happy in poor air and he got a 51.

Mark R took round 13 in very good air with a 36.87. Paul’s slipped behind as taped up Proton was on the wrong model memory – the result was a zero score but thankfully no further damage.

Round 14 was won by Paul Stubley flying his Orden in some very nice air on 39. There seemed to be more bad air coming through with Paul G on 51 and Peter on 49.

JP took the last round with a 42 in decent air from Stefan and Greg. Paul G flew a 48 with his fixed Proton to hang on to second place. Peter’s luck ran out with a high 52 in poor air meaning a 10 second / 195 point swing to JP who took third spot.

Overall a great end to the winter with pretty much two full days flying. It was good to meet Frank, who unfortunately damaged his model before the comp but stayed to help out with a huge amount of buzzing, thanks Frank, see you next time.
